Ice Fishing
Winter Doesn't Stop Fishermen
Ice Fishing
Once our lakes have frozen over, you'll see hardy fishermen and women heading out to drill a hole in the ice and drop a line to catch some of the largest lake trout you've seen.
The Pinedale Lions Club hosts an annual ice fishing derby every March. For more information, visit their website here.
Safety Tips
It is vital for your safety, along with that of others in your group, for you to know how thick the ice is before walking, or snowmobiling on a frozen lake. Here is a link that will help you that will help you from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
As we've stressed in other places on this site, let someone at home know where you are going and what time you plan on being home. Don't forget to call when you are safely off the ice!
Again, warm clothing is a must for this activity. Have a warm base layer with additional layers that you can take on and off as the temperature shifts with the day.
Adding a floatation device to your gear kit for ice fishing may save a life. A spud bar is useful to test the ice in front of you as you walk out. Ice cleats will keep you from slipping and falling. Floating ice picks and an emergency throw rope are also important safety gear items to bring along.
Local sporting goods stores that sell gear and fishing licenses can be seen here.
